Sidney Nolan Trust

Sidney Nolan Trust

About the project

This project has provided us with the unique opportunity to work with a charity and develop their outdoor accommodation portfolio to enable them to host guests on site for short stays and residential short courses in creative accommodation set in a natural landscape.

The Sidney Nolan Trust is a registered charity, founded by the Australian artist Sir Sidney Nolan in 1985. Nolan was a leading artist of the 20th century, and his Ned Kelly paintings became iconic. Today the Trust’s work is inspired by his life-long experimentation, innovation, and passion for creativity, as well as his love for the environment. We care for the world’s largest collection of his artwork, his extensive archives, as well as his former home The Rodd.

The intended treehouse and cabin will add to the trusts existing portfolio of the fantastic Rodd Court property, Orchard Cottage holiday let, and extensive gallery space set out in the historic barns and buildings.

Chanstone Court Farm Treehouse

About the project

This project has been developed for a client in rural Herefordshire near the Welsh borders and iconic Black Mountains. The farm is a 500-acre traditional livestock farm with extensive SSSI and Ancient Woodland set in a natural landscape cut off from mainstream life.

The chosen site for the treehouse development is on the edge of the historic woodland in an elevated position looking out over a private secluded valley. This site was chosen with the client as the ideal location due to the natural setting with little to no impact on any neighbouring land set in a part of the farm with abundant wildlife.

The 6-8 person fully accessible treehouses will be some of the first of their kind providing luxury and creative accommodation to a very underserviced part of the marketplace. The clients have a personal intention to provide fully accessible accommodation that a whole family or group of friends can enjoy together, and we are very happy to be working with them on this project. The proposal also has significant ecological, biodiversity, and landscape enhancement plans developed alongside the proposal to increase habitat and biodiversity on the site.

Country Estate Northern Ireland

About the project

This project is a pioneering development for Northern Ireland set on an extensive traditional 1000-acre country estate near the north coast and the iconic Giants Causeway. The estate has various businesses that the accommodation will feed into such as sporting enterprises and traditional livestock farming.

The extensive landholding comprises areas of moorland, rivers, meadows, and pasture as well as historic and diverse SSSI woodland. The multiunit development is set out on a tree covered hillside with impressive views over the surrounding area.

The project is significant in many ways, not least as the development will be entirely powered from green energy generated on the estate by a hydro power installation connected to the river. The suite of large 6-8 person cabins and 2-4 person treehouses are set out through the woodland in spacious and beautiful locations all with access to a small outdoor spa equipped with saunas and plunge pools.

Standon Brook Cabins, Site Plan, Crown and Canopy

Standon Brook Cabins

About the project

This project is based between High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Surrey on a small but beautiful parcel of land surrounded by trees with a peaceful brook running through the middle.

After providing a feasibility assessment for the owners, we then went onto design the project and undertake the pre and full planning applications. The land will benefit from this project taking place as we also created an ecological enhancement plan including habitat creation and tree planting to offset the project.

The cabin designs are based upon a Mongolian yurt structure that is fully timber built and fit to run all seasons. The re-imagined structures have a contemporary twist with large picture windows and shadow vertical baton cladding.

Brinsop Court Treehouses

About the project

This set of treehouses are soon to be luxury treetop accommodation at the gorgeous Brinsop Court, an established wedding venue in rural Herefordshire. The treehouses are set in a 100-acre patch of native woodland on the prominent Merryhill. The two treehouse suites are a pair of two-story luxury full self-catering treehouse set in secluded areas of the forest.

The planning application work on this job was incredibly technical due to various land protected designations which resulted in a large amount of survey work and innovative problem-solving. The treehouses are designed to have minimal impact on the ground using concreteless ground screw foundations and entirely contained foul and greywater systems.

The treehouses are designed to be solar-powered and a tree planting offset scheme 100 times greater than the project area taken up has been planted elsewhere on the hill creating hectares of new forest and habitat.

Tretawdy Nature Reserve, Crown and Canopy, Proposed Isometric View 1

Tretawdy Nature Reserve

About the project

This innovative stone barn conversion project has been developed for Hereford Wildlife Trust on a newly founded nature reserve in rural Herefordshire near the Monmouthshire borders. The project has been developed in order to generate sustainable long-term funding to ensure the development and survival of Tretawdy Nature Reserve and to fund conservation projects on the land.

The build has been designed as a hybrid development that can appeal to either the glamping market or to the more traditional holiday cottage market. The green roof and solar enhanced design set the project apart from any conventional barn conversions and ecological elements and solutions are built into the infrastructure underground as all of the surface and greywater generated will be filtered through a custom-designed wetland system.

The project was awarded RDPE funding and is Hereford Wildlife Trusts’ flagship hospitality development. Guests can come and experience the nature reserve first hand with the opportunity to be involved in constructive conservation work on the land.

Dewsall Court Treehouse, Crown and Canopy, View 1

Dewsall Court Treehouse

About the project

This inspiring treehouse was a fantastic project for Dewsall Court, a prestigious wedding venue in rural Herefordshire. The treehouse has been designed as a treetop hangout for guests as well as a structure to host bands on the lower deck and performers in the top nest.

The treehouse is set in the extended court gardens overlooking the surrounding fields, gardens, and stream way that runs through the property. The owners wanted to create something unique that could possibly even be built upon and extended in the future.

We created the concept of the treehouse with the clients and then along with a structural engineer, came up with the load-bearing makeup and framework. We custom designed and fabricated the treehouse bolts and hardware so we could fix into the tree trunk in a way that was extremely stable and strong but more importantly without harming the tree.

All of the timber for the project was sourced in Herefordshire and milled by ourselves at our workshops before being taken to the site and constructed and the nest materials were harvested from the local Dutchy estate.

Old Shop Cabin, Monmouthshire, Crown and Canopy, Exterior View 2

Old Shop Cabin

About the project

This development is situated just outside the beautiful Wye-Valley AONB right on the border of Monmouth and Herefordshire. The land has far-reaching natural views out towards the southwest overlooking the impressive Black Mountain range just into Wales. The site is predominantly covered in trees and is a former stone quarry turned woodland. The site area has great elevation overlooking the valley below and far beyond so it was crucial that the cabin harnessed these views.

The structure is entirely clad in timber with a green roof so it will be camouflaged in the indigenous woodland. The orientation of the cabin is set towards the expansive views over the southwest and the face ends of the building are entirely glazed to give you the full panoramic experience whilst inside form the luxury bathtub or dining table.

A pre-planning application was formed and submitted along with the designs and following this, a full application was compiled. As the site was in a woodland environment, a full tree assessment and report had to form part of the application along with a topographical survey to establish root protection areas for the trees close by to the structure. This, along with concrete-less foundations would ensure no trees were harmed by the development and the least impact on the ground and surrounding environment were created by the cabin.

The Cowshed, Suffolk Crown and Canopy, Interior View 1

The Cowshed

About the project

The Lost Garden Retreat project in Suffolk began with initial on-site consultancy. We viewed this beautiful site with the clients and discovered a fabulous back story and history to the land. Even though the area was slightly derelict, it used to be a victorian pleasure garden and under the surface was the perfect foundation for the retreat.

Following the initial visits and discussions, we then began to work on the outline concept and design of each space. Each retreat has a theme running throughout the interior and is centred with a view out over the beautiful lake and gardens.

The tent units were supplied by Mark Scott at Clear Sky and a lot of hard work from Elisa the client as she was the backbone of the entire project and involved every step of the way.

Burnt Wood Cabin, Powys, Crown and Canopy, Exterior View 1

Burnt Wood Cabin

About the project

This cabin was built for some clients in the Welsh borders, its nestled in a small wooded area overlooking a secluded valley.

This space was built entirely from scratch much like our other projects, we milled all of the timber and custom-built every element right down to the soft furnishings and curtains. The interior was styled by Bex, our interior designer and the cabin was designed by our build manager Bill.

The burnt wood cabin sleeps two people and has a log burner for heating and a fully fitted kitchen, the shower and toilet facilities are spacious but the outdoor shower is not for the faint-hearted in winter! This development is now up and running as a fully functioning glamping site open to the public.
